The feeling after Winning

In my team's cricket season this summer, we registered our first win yesterday after losing 4 matches on a trot. My individual contribution in the match was hardly anything ... but the feeling of the win that swept me after we got the final wicket was more than anything else in the world.

During our losing sequence, I was being contended by knowing that we were fighting hard but were not getting the results. But yesterdays win has awaken me and buzzed in my ear that nothing sounds better than a win ... I still do not agree with the 'win at any cost' attitude, but am sure that this win will give me a extra push in achieving my goals for my team in Cricket as well as achieving my goals in my personal and professional life ...

As I have always said, Cricket itself as a sport has been a great influence in the way I think of my life ... Hats off to Cricket - An amazing sport !!!

Looking for the road ...

I think people can be classified in 2 ways for the way they act when they feel their life is stagnant ... The first kind of people will start trying all the available ways and then finally will find the road that will bring a motion in their life .. The other kind of people will wait .. till their heart and mind agrees that the road they decide to travel on .. will bring the change in their life ...

The first kind of people are at advantage ... but what about the 2nd kind of people ..

A 4-5 year old thought!!

I usually think a lot before doing something ... I consider it good sometimes and bad other times. Sometimes I pick some topic and just think ......................................

4-5 years back during such a long thinking exercise, I came across a thought which I discussed with my few other friends that time and realized that it indeed was a good idea. The thought was something about how we - normal working professionals can efficiently serve Mother India.

Since most of the Indian couples do wish to have atleast 2 children. Then why not have one child of their own and adopt another child. This way one can be serving Mother India in a best possible way and also realise their own wish of having 2 children. When I discussed this with my few friends and one of my friend told me that he will talk to his fiancee about this, I felt very happy.

I know there are many roadblocks in implementing this. For eg .. the couple needs to agree, the traditional mindset of the elders could be one of the issue. But giving this a thought with open discussions amongst the couple is always feasible.

Can this be made reality? Well, it is upto all of us. So friends, let me know your thoughts !!!

"Our" Day ??

It was one Thursday evening at work and most of my team members and few others decided to take half day off from work. It was around 5:30 PM and we were getting ready to attend of one of our team-mate's engagement function in Andheri. I was excited as always because in such social functions, you get to dance and eat a lot.

So we - a group of about 10-15 people decided to take a half day off the office, which is leaving at 6:00 PM after being in the office at 9:00 AM :) this was a joke those days, as generally most of the people used to stay late in office until 10:00 PM. We got onto the Andheri bus and occupied the last 2 rows in the bus. The bus started and we also started singing and playing Antakshari and playing jokes and making fun of each other. Because of the usual mumbai traffic, it took us about 1-1.5 hrs to reach Andheri.

We all got off at a place walking distance from the Community hall. On our way, we thought of buying bouquets for the to-be engaged couple. We bought two big bouquets from a road-side stall.

After about 5-10 minutes of march past towards the hall, we reached the entrance of the hall. Since it was a huge place, I asked the security guard about the proper hall in which engagement was going to take place. He said, he is not aware of any such thing. I thought poor fellow, he does not know anything and called our friend, who was getting engaged. Our friend said, that we have to go inside and the hall is nearby only. So we proceeded as per the directions given by our friend. We reached the entrance of a big hall as per the directions. We went inside and there were two people sitting there. We asked about the function and they said they are not aware of any such function. I said you must be mistaken and asked them to check their records. They looked at the record-keeping book and said no such function today. Then they said somebody must have fooled you today and then we realised yeah today is April 1st and We are the FOOLs !!!

You guys will say that we were dumb enough to believe this thing at first when the date was April 1st. But if you find out how the entire event was planned by our friend, you will believe one will easily fall into the trap. Let me list how he fooled us -
1. He sends out the invitation email about 3 weeks back and then goes to the office gym. When I confront him there knowing that the date was April 1st, he says no its true and he left his desk as he was feeling shy.
2. When we questioned him in the subsequent days about this, he one day gets a picture of some girl and tells us that she is the lucky girl and her name too.
3. Even after this my other friends suspected him, and they called at his place and asked him mom about this. His mom too said that its true. So see he had very meticulously planned everything.
4. Now on April 1st, to show that he is really busy in preparations he takes a day off from the office.
I guess the above 4 things would make anybody accept that yes he (our friend) was going to get engaged on April 1st.

Well after this he did come to the venue and then took us for dinner to a nearby restaurant. But yes, we were all made victims of April 1st by this great genius - Cheris Mehta !! Every year first April reminds me of this incident. Hats off to Cheris !!!

PS - The last time I talked with Cheris, he told me that his wife is pregnant and the delivery date is on April 1st 2008 !! :-)

Dr Jog !!! My favourite doctor :)

When my friend Rushit asked me to start a blog, I started thinking what will I write !! Then after some thinking ... I realised yep .. I have so many things in my life .. that would bring a smile on other people's face ... And Here I am now .. with the incident which I consider unforgettable, funniest in my life!

This happened when I was into my first year of my first job at Patni Computer Systems in Navi Mumbai. I don't remember well but it was in Dec '02 or Jan '03, as I was allotted to a new project and was learning about my role from a senior team member. One day in the morning as I was getting ready for office, I had a severe headache and I told this to one of my 7 room-mates!! Yes, 7 room-mates :) My friend Rohit who used to work in the same project told me that we have a doctor in our office whom I can visit in the office hours and ask about some medicines for headache ... So I said ok, that would be a great idea.

So now I reach office and start working. After an hour or so, when I felt that the headache was coming back, I decided to visit the doctor. So I told my team-member that I will be coming back in few minutes. So I go down and ask the security person for the Dr Jog's cabin. He pointed me towards the Dr's cabin and I was on my way to a great adventure. :) I knocked and Dr Jog asked me to enter the cabin.

Here is the dialog that took place between me and Dr. Jog as far my memory goes -

Dr Jog : Yes ??

Me : Sir, I am having a severe headache since last few days and I am not able to concentrate much into my work

Dr Jog : Are you made to stay late at work ?

Me : No sir ! but it is really a pain .. and I find it difficult to concentrate ..

Dr Jog : Have you been coming in night shifts ? Who is your Project Leader ?

Me : Nothing like that sir .. But it could because I wash my hair daily .. but if you can give me some medicines or take a look ...

Dr Jog : Okie .. you can take some normal medicines like ...

Me : Aspirin ..??

Dr Jog : Yes

Me : Okie, thank you Sir !!

So I come out disappointed from Dr Jog's cabin thinking that why did this doctor not check me or gave me any medicines? May be he is a jerk and does not know anything. I come back to my desk, went to my friend Rohit who had told me about this doctor and told him that the doctor does not know anything .. !!

Then I got back to my usual work ... took some medicines .. and was okay ... but every now and then I used to hear the page for Dr Jog like 'Dr Jog please contact so and so'. This used to make me think - why does this Dr. never sits at his place .. He is just taking money and not doing any work !!!

So time passes and I get released from my previous project and am allotted to another project. I had forgotten the above incident with the dialog .. I start working in my new project with new team members and am on the same floor and same wing, where Dr Jog's cabin is. So one friday evening, when few minutes before leaving for the day, I was talking with a senior team member of mine and were discussing about our Project Leader who had spent about 5 years in the company. I popped a question, why is our Project Lead not leaving this company and joining some other company, since he has got so much experience. And my team member replies, he(PL) is not going to leave the company until he sits on Dr Jog's seat. To which I replied, this is not going to be possible. Our PL is in a technical field, while Dr Jog is a physician. Then my team member laughed on me and said nope, he is a doctorate in technical field (Comp. Science) I suppose. And Dr Jog is the location head of our office. Oops .. a big blunder ... I realise ... :) So that day while returning in the bus, I was alone on the first seat and kept visualising my incident with Dr Jog again and again and laughed so much on myself. Now for the first time I was wondering, what Dr Jog would have thought about me. :)

But more fun begun when I told about this incident to two friends Sujay and Amit of my previous project. They also had a good laugh. But they narrated this incident to other team-members and soon this news was talk of the town amongst most of the people in my account. My then Project Manager took me to Dr Jog to ask for apologies. But Dr Jog was modest to say that he had realised about me mistaking him to be a physician that day itself. Looks like he too was having fun. :) This incident was even discussed in appraisal of senior managers.

Well .. this happened in very early stage of my work life. But I will cherish this incident all my life. Whenever I think of this incident, a smile comes to my face. But wait this is not the last such incident .. there are few more, which I will narrate as I get time. :)

Till then .. have a good laugh (especially my friends of Patni Computers)
